When planning my trip to Chicago, I obviously had to do some research into the best foodie places in the city. If there is one thing that I like as much as travel, it’s culinary travel. BomboBar found it’s way on the top of my list, not for the views or the cold and small outdoor stand, but for the unique experience, twist on Italian desserts, and Instagram-worthy food.

Chicago’s freezing temperatures make eating an hourly ritual. If you plan on staying warm, there is no shortage of food in Chicago with a donut shop on almost every corner. However, if you are looking for a more unique experience, donut look any further than BomboBar in Chicago’s West Loop. This hole in the wall walk-up window, attached to the busy Bar Siena, is known for their bomboloni, hot beverages, and gelato’s.

We visited in the cold month of October. Yes — October is considered a cold month with temperatures ranging around 32°F (that’s 0°C)! So come prepared to fight over the outdoor propane heaters. Just kidding, but it is a condensed outdoor area so dress warm and come with an appetite.

BomboBar’s inventive spirit shines through with an array of Bomboloni flavors ranging from Nutella Cream and S’mores to Salted Caramel and Maple Cream. For those of you who do not know what a Bomboloni is, it is an Italian cream-filled and hole-less donut. We were in 3 so decided to order a bit of everything and share in order to get the full experience. One of us ordered the Nutella Cream Bomboloni and the other the Funfetti Hotter Chocolate, their famous winter beverage of choice.

Made fresh and on the spot, the Bomboloni was served warm, perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. What makes BomboBar so unique is the fact that rather than receiving the Bomboloni already made, you get to make it yourself. The sweet comes with a small plastic squeeze bottle that reads “Squeeze Me,” which is great because it allows you to control the amount of filling you want. The Bomboloni’s are $3.50 each so extremely affordable given the amount of food you receive.

The Funfetti Hotter Chocolate came in a “cup” the size of a pint of ice cream, so more than enough to feed 3 people…! The drink was oozing with whipped cream, white chocolate, sprinkles and funfetti shortbread. And of course, it was adorned with another one of their famous vanilla donuts. The drink is whimsical and fun and the perfect calorie load needed to stay warm in the frigid Chicago weather. The Hotter Chocolates are $9.00 each and come in other flavors like S’mores and Peppermint.

For those of you who might be concerned about your dairy intolerance, Vegetarian or Vegan needs, and nut or gluten allergies—no need to fear. BomboBar caters to everyone’s needs. Don’t forget to put this small and intimate bumping spot on your Chicago bucket list!
