The Return of the $213,000 Gold T-Shirt

On August 8th, 2014 school dropout and garment business entrepreneur Pankaj Parakh celebrated his 45th birthday. As a gift to himself, he chose to exploit his love of gold by customizing a $213,000 his own pure 18 to 22 carat gold t-shirt. The shirt weighs 9 pounds (4 Kg) and took 20 goldsmiths 3,200 hours to stitch it together carefully as to prevent chafing.

Does this sound familiar? That’s because an Indian businessman named Datta Phuge made the exact same investment in 2013, putting a third of his worth $230,888 into a gold shirt as well. Only difference being that Phuge had 15 goldsmiths work on the shirt in only 15 days.

Both t-shirts have an armor-like appearance because they draw inspiration from old images of Indian kings wearing suits of armor.

To ensure that the shirt isn’t stolen, both Phuge and Parakh have security guards with them wherever they go. What do you guys think? Is it excessive and ostentatious? Or cool and a fashion statement?
