For the Fourth of July weekend, Pat and I headed out to Long Island for a stay-cation. Although the crowds flock to Montauk during the time, I prefer to steer away from the massive crowds inundating the beaches out East and stay further inland. Just because you’re not at Montauk doesn’t mean their aren’t thousands of relaxing activities (that require less people)! One activity that can truly be done anywhere and not only on Long Island is to play a nice relaxing game of golf. Pat and I headed to the driving range to practice some of our strokes. The weather was just starting to clear up so it wasn’t too hot out on the range.
After a nice hour of practice, Pat and I returned to his house and hopped into the pool to cool down. Since the weather wasn’t great for going out on the boat, we decided to head out East (not towards Montauk, but on the North Fork which would be less crowded) for some good old fashioned Long Island wineries! One of my favorite wineries in Long Island is Mattebella Vineyards. Pat and I headed over for the uncorking of their 2016 sparkling rosé wine. I had always been a white wine, specifically Pinot Grigio, but recently my taste buds have turned to the dark side (literally). For some reason, I am not capable of drinking white wine anymore! I only drink rosé in the summer and red wine in the winter. Therefore Mattebella Vineyards was the perfect go-to for cloudy summers days since their rosé is one of my favorites.
Mattebella Vineyards is located in Southold. With 22 acres of land Mattebella does things the old-fashioned way. Unlike many other vineyards on Long Island, they process all of their wines by hand rather than through mechanical harvesters and leave for leaf removal equipment. What makes these wines so refined is their commitment to quality via sustainable handcrafting – an art form that is long gone and hard to come by.
What you will find at Mattebella is an old world charm, rustic yet contemporary, that takes one back to the good life of the 1600s. Visitors can choose to sit in the cottage, around the patio, or near the fig garden while enjoying table service, delightful wines, and homemade appetizers. The environment offers a quaint escape from the crowded shores of Long Island and surrounding commercial wineries.
Unlike many other wineries that are equipped with a handful of wine tasting rooms, Mattebella offers a unique patio overlooking the vineyards where one can sit back, relax, and sip on their fine rosé.
Their appetizers are just as handmade as their wines. Their love of semolina bread feels like it comes directly out of the oven. They offer a variety of crostini featuring freshly cured cheeses and their homemade fruits and jams. We opted for three different types of crostini’s: Bree, fig jam, and honey; Mozzarella and red pepper; Feta cheese and eggplant.
Due to it’s authentic old-style production, wine bottles at Mattebella Vineyards are limited. With only 2000 made every year I highly recommend you drive over and have a taste of their one of a kind European-style wines now before they run out…!
