People often visit Kyoto for three days, hit the Golden Pavilion, and think they’ve “done” Japan. But having lived in Japan for 8 years of my life, I know that Kyoto doesn’t reveal itself to the casual observer. It’s a city of layers, where a thousand-year-old temple sits in the shadow of a skyscraper, and the most life-changing meal is often hidden behind a nondescript wooden door with no sign.

Why choose this guide? Curated by a former Japan resident. I grew up navigating the exactness of Japanese culture, from the non-negotiable bows in my after-school swim lessons to the precise etiquette of a tea ceremony. This map isn’t a tourist’s itinerary; it’s a decade-plus collection of the places that made Japan feel like home.

This map includes over 120+ locations that skip the surface-level “must-sees” to give you the version of Kyoto that exists for those who stay a while.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • The “If You Know, You Know” Dining: Beyond the Michelin stars, I’ve pinned the tiny, 8-seat bars specializing in yuba (tofu skin), the local kissatens (retro cafes) for a traditional “morning set,” and the secret ramen shops in the Ichijoji district where you won’t see another tourist.

  • Temples with Soul: I’ve included the classics, but the real gems are the quiet ones: the moss-covered steps of and 1,200 unique statues and serene gardens certain shrines.

  • The Art of the Stroll: My personal walking routes.

  • Curated Shopping: From the antique shops and galleries to the generational stalls, I’ve marked the places where craftsmanship is still the priority.

  • Free in-app updates as I continue to return to the place that raised me.

  • Lifetime access (meaning there’s no limit to using it).

Stop scrolling through generic guides. Add 8 years of local living to your phone and experience the Kyoto that most people drive right past.
