Ibiza is broken up into 5 municipalities or areas: Ibiza Old Town (Eivissa), Sant Jose, San Antonio, Santa Eulalia, and San Juan. Each offers its own unique atmosphere and attractions. You could dedicate a full day to each area if you really wanted to. But if your looking for a place to stay or a central location, this guide will likely help you find what you’re looking for. Each area is made for a different type of traveler. There’s the family-friendly area, party zone, relaxed and rural countryside, and more. So which area in Ibiza is right for you? Take the quiz, then read more about what to do in each area below.

1. Ibiza Town (Eivissa)

Stay here: If you’re looking for a party.

Let’s start with the most famous area or municipality of Ibiza island – Ibiza Old Town or Eivissa – AKA culture during the day and party central at night. Ibiza Old Town is the capital and largest municipality on Ibiza island and is located on the Southern tip of Ibiza island. It is the vibrant hub of the island. It is known for its historic Dalt Vila, a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring a fortified old town with narrow cobblestone streets, ancient walls, and stunning views.

Ideas for what to do in Ibiza Old Town, Eivissa:

  • Explore Dalt Vila
  • Eat freshly made orelletes, Ibiza’s number one sweet that in the shape of Elephant ears, at a bakery like La Cava or Le Croissant Show
  • Grab lunch at Calma Ibiza at Platja d’en Bossa beach club
  • Enjoy dinner at El portalon: Farm-to-table dining in a 600-year-old palazzo in Dalt Vila
  • Visit Ses Salines for salt pans, marshes, and a natural wonderland you can explore with plenty of beaches

2. San José

Stay here: If you want the best beaches with lively chiringuitos.

San José is home to some of Ibiza’s most stunning beaches. It offers a mix of natural beauty, traditional Ibiza village charm, and a relaxed atmosphere. Located on the Southwest coast, San José is particularly known for its picturesque beaches like Cala Conta, Cala Bassa, and Cala Tarida, as well as its authentic village with whitewashed houses and local amenities.

Ideas for what to do in San José:

  • Visit the beach Es Bol Nou i.e. Sa Caleta
  • Search for the Tunnel of Sa Caleta
  • Hit up a famous Chiringuito for lunch like Jondal (which requires reservations and is booked up weeks in advance)
  • For a quieter more local Chiringuito, visit Cala Escondida – no reservations needed and is much more low key and away from the party crowd
  • Get your party vibes on for happy hour at Blue Marlin in Cala Jondal
  • Go find Atlantis i.e. the Sa Pedrera de Cala d’Hort natural pools
  • Hike to Torre des Savinar, an old watchtower with incredible views, for sunset
  • Eat dinner at La Paloma or Balafia
  • Eat dinner at Apio

3. San Antonio

Stay here: If you want you to catch the best sunsets on the island.

San Antonio is known for its spectacular sunsets due to its municipality’s position on the Northwest side of Ibiza island. It is home to the popular Sunset Strip, where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views while sipping cocktails at iconic beach bars like Café del Mar and Mambo. Sant Antoni also offers a lively nightlife scene, beautiful beaches, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Ideas for what to do in San Antonio:

  • Visit Experimental for cocktails and dancing near salt marshes

  • Find and sunbathe at the rock formations at Punta Galera
  • Visit Puertas de Can Soleil and the Cala llentia monument for sunset. Cala Llentia, in the west of the island, is home to a mysterious sculpture formed by 13 basalt columns in an elliptical shape. Because of that, this monument is known as “Ibiza’s Stonehenge”, however, it’s real name is “Time and Space”
  • Visit Cala Saladeta and Cala Salada early in the AM to avoid the crowds
  • Find the Cave of Sa Figuera Borda (aka the Rave Cave) and sunbathe or enjoy a secret party during the evening
  • Cala Graconieta

4. Santa Eulalia My personal favorite

Stay here: If you looking for a family-friendly, no ruckus area.

Located on the Southeast side of Ibiza island, Santa Eulalia is a charming coastal town known for its family-friendly atmosphere. It boasts beautiful beaches, a picturesque promenade, and a marina. Santa Eulalia is a quieter more relaxed side of Ibiza, but still with a bustling marina.

Ideas for what to do in Santa Eulalia:

  • Shop Libro Azul an Sluiz
  • Visit Bar Costa, the oldest bar on Ibiza island. Get the delicious jamon with pan con tomato, which is a local specialty
  • Grab lunch at El Bigotes – rumor has it the King of spain was once turned away because he didn’t reserve a table. Try the bullit de peix, one of the most typical dishes of Ibizan Cuisine
  • Swim and snorkle next door to El Bigotes at Cala Mastella
  • Spend the day at Aguas Blancas beach. No one knows about this beach except celebs. It’s pretty quite compared to other beaches on Ibiza island and has a small, yet charming Chiringuito
  • Shop Es Cucons and Galeria Elefante
  • Walk around Sant Carles de Peralta village
  • Visit the hippie market Las Dalias in Santa Eulalia – open from 11AM – 8PM OR do the night market on Sunday – super fun and has a secret nightclub on the side too

5. San Juan – My personal favorite

Stay here: If you looking for quietest side of Ibiza in the countryside, but next to beaches, and with a famous “upscale” hippie culture.

San Juan is known for its bohemian and hippie vibe. It is located on the Northeast side of the island and this is where Pat and I stayed. The area is the quietest and most rural of the five. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and stunning beaches and hidden coves.

Ideas for what to do in San Juan:

  • Grab dinner overlooking the cove at Restaurant & Lounge Eden at 5-star hotel Hacienda Na Xamena
  • Swim and catch a sunset at Cala Es Canaret
  • Hike to Cala Blanca for a very quiet and private beach
  • Spend the day at Cala Xarraca beach
  • Participate in a Hippy sunset at Benirras Beach. Join hundreds of hippies playing the drums during sunset. Because of this, access by car is limited on Sundays so make sure you go in the morning to find a place to park your car. Otherwise, you can get there by bus or boat bus from San Antonio.
  • Puertas de cielos or gates of heaven is a very down to earth, local place to eat on cliff overlooking the water
  • Eat dinner at Casa Lhasa, it’s super cute and down to earth
