If you’re looking for a good time, super cool fisherman-inspired decor, and amazing live music bands, then head over to Block Island’s Captain Nick’s Rock-N-Roll Bar.

Ocean Avenue in Block Island gets a whole new level of energy when its seasonal watering hole, Captain Nick’s Rock-N-Roll Bar, reopens for the summer season from May through September. The timber frame was built by Captain Nick DePetrillo in 1976 using pieces from the old Block Island Inn. It used to be a place where music and good times flowed, but now it does even more so then before. From the outside it may not look like much, but the inside is full of character.

Captain Nick’s Rock-N-Roll Bar features live music and entertainment within this 2 floor high-ceiling establishment. The Thursday we were there the Grateful Dead tribute band was playing. The inside is rich in character with a huge shark head, fish nets, and random memorabilia and decor adorning the walls. The band that was playing was not just any other live band, they were mind blowing. The guys were excellent and this was theme we saw throughout Block Island. All the live musicians had voices that were incredible. You may enter with the intention of just having a few beers and not dancing, but you’ll be swept away by the energy of the locals and the crowd and find yourself dancing by the end of the night.

Between intermissions, Pat and I stayed outside on the patio and ordered a drink. TVs featured the movie Jaws…there seemed to be some sort of shark trend going on here between the shark heads inside the bar and the movie Jaws on TV. I never found out what the true story or inspiration behind this was, but I think it might have something to do with Block Island’s Giant Shark Tournament that is held every July.

Outside you’ll find a row of wooden beams decorated and hung alongside a long wall. This is known as the brag wall. It was started after Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Captain Nick’s Rock-N-Roll Bar had respectfully collected some wooden remains from nearby beaches and decided to design them with some of their favorite places. Eventually the wooden wall was extended to customers who visited. Now anyone can bring in their own wooden sign with their favorite place to visit and hang it on the wall, similar to The Oar’s concept.

With limited places in Block Island that stay open “late,” depending on what you define as late, Captain Nick’s Rock-N-Roll bar is one of the most down to earth, laid-back, and genuine atmospheres on the island. I highly recommend you come here for a good time and good vibes! Even if you stop by early after dinner, there will be music playing for you to enjoy.
