When you’re on an island, and yes Ireland is an island, you can’t help but want to eat seafood. Klaw’s The Seafood Cafe caught our eye and made it on our list of must-go restaurants.

After spending the entire morning checking out (yes pun intended!) Trinity College Library, Pat and I were famished. We were really hoping to get a table at the famous Klaw restaurant, probably the smallest seafood restaurant in the world. It only has 3 tables and 1 counter to host 12 seats. We approached the hole-in-the-wall restaurant, but it was completely packed. The place is famous for being Dublin’s best seafood restaurant. Let’s face it, when you’re on an island (and yes remember that Ireland is an island!), you can’t not have the best seafood available. We were redirected to their new sister restaurant The Seafood Cafe that opened September 2019. It has more seating and is a bit more modern looking, but the chef and the menu are identical to Klaw.

Since Pat and I were going to skip out on the Guinness Factory, we decided to order ourselves a nice cup of Guinness to warm ourselves up. Dark, creamy, and heavy. The beer definitely had us stirring up an appetite. It isn’t for everyone as it is a strong beer, but it is the beer of choice when in Dublin so I recommend you try it.

We ended up ordering a common Irish dish: Smoked pollock & cockle chowder. It was the first week of December, it was cold and it was raining. We were in need of a hearty broth chowder. Now you may be asking yourself, what is that? It’s a warm fish broth made of pollock fish and cockle, a type of clam. The chowder is super rich in nutrients and a pick-me-up that can be had anytime of day. Think of it almost like chicken soup, but with fish. Niall, the owner of Klaw and The Seafood Cafe, is also the owner of “Sustainable Seafood Ireland.” You can be sure that all his fish and shellfish are the finest and highest quality.

As the steam from the broth touched my lips and I had my first taste, I melted. The broth is a big pool of deliciousness that I’d want to swim in daily. It’s not a thick soup like clam chowder, but it’s light and refreshing. We cleaned our plates and headed out to explore the Creative Quarter. The soup gave us a pep in our step that we didn’t have prior. It definitely made our list for seafood restaurants in Dublin.
