Eat in Fès: Café Clock

Squeeze down a long narrow alley and you'll find yourself at Café Clock. If you're a foodie or adventurous eater, than I'm sure you've heard of it, as it is renowned for its world famous Camel Burgers.

This place isn't so much "a hidden gem" in Morocco as it is a wide known staple and must-visit dining destination. It was started a few years back by an English man named Mike Richardson, who you will still see frolicking around the property today, and serves hundreds of camel burgers every day. He's hard to miss as soon as you enter the premises. With his big smile and booming voice, he makes his way around each table greeting customers and making small talk.

The property boasts a beautiful terrace with views of Fès, but it was too hot to sit outside so we took a seat on the eclectic first floor. Tired from a morning of cooking with Mina at Riad Anata, I decided to order a cold mint tea. It was delivered to me in a fancy tall glass with a cute and curly bendy straw. The presentation was different from the way the traditional Moroccan restaurants and cafés would have brought it to me–it was "hip"– and perfect Instagram moment! As we took in the scenery a peaked at the modern and interesting menu list, Pat and I didn't think twice about our order–the Camel Burger. I mean, when would we ever get the chance to taste Camel again right? As the saying goes.."When in Rome, do as the Romans do." While we waited for our meals I noticed that the Café offered various artistic events such as calligraphy lessons, two hour cooking classes for visitors, henna sessions and more. The vibe overall was very hipster for Morocco from the class offerings to the menus, wall décor, colorful cushions and tarps, and plants. We totally got why people would want to come here for some down time. There was even a private library on the second floor featuring a computer, board games, books and wifi! I turned to my right and saw the owner, Mike, with not one but TWO camel burgers on his plate..which made me think I couldn't wait to eat my own! Camel tastes like a very thick and condensed, chewy sausage. Their fries were quite amazing! I personally prefer the old school American burger, but when in Fès if you are looking for a change up and hip cool and locale, I highly recommend Café Clock! Eating a Camel Burger is a once in a lifetime experience and if you want to check it off your bucket list, there is no better place to do so then at Café Clock.
