Street food is an important part of Hong Kong’s history. Yet it’s hard to find high quality Hong Kong Street Food, especially as a foreigner, when wandering the streets. Enter Bao Dim Tat Yan.

When strolling around Hong Kong, you will come across A LOT of street stalls. And while you will see locals in every one of them, us foreigners are not necessarily well-equipped to eat in every stall. The way in which the food is cooked, the water it’s in, the plates they use, the way utensils are washed, and the bacteria in food, make it very common for foreigners to get stomach bugs. So when I came across Bao Dim Tat Yan, I had to share the amazing Hong Kong street food I found. This locale is not only very well-kept, but the food looked super appetizing compared to other stalls I had seen. It was out of this world!

Bao Dim Tat Yan is as local as it gets. The staff doesn’t speak any English, so my mom and I had to resort to pointing at the food we wanted and signal with our fingers 1 or 2 portions. To be honest, that’s how we ordered the majority of our meals in China! We liked the food so much we went not once, but three times during our trip to Hong Kong. We had everything from the dim sum to the sesame balls and noodles.

FUN FACT:
Dim Sum literally means “to eat a little something” in Cantonese. It is the most popular food in Hong Kong.

For first-timers who have never had Dim Sum or Chinese food before, I recommend you order:

  • Siu Mai (pronounced Shumai): Traditional Chinese dumpling. Order pork, shrimp, or a combo (pictured below)
  • Char Siu Bao: Steamed barbecue pork-filled buns
  • Lo Mai Gai: Sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves
  • Jian Dui: Fried sesame balls made from glutinous rice flour. Inside is a hot and steaming sweet bean paste

LOCATION:

Bao Dim Tat Yan is located right next to the Fa Yuen Fish Market. You can read more about the fish market here. Bao Dim Tat Yan is located on Shanghai Street between Nanking Street and Jordan Road. You can’t find it on Google Maps, so remember to save this location for reference.
