The number of people that fled to Hong Kong in the 50s and 60s, left everlasting marks on the city’s landscape. One of these areas is Choi Hung Estate.

Wong Tai Sin District is another area that very much, like Quarry Bay, speaks to the architectural marvel of Hong Kong and the density of the population. Choi Hung Estate opened in 1963 and was the first public housing estate in Hong Kong and the largest at the time, housing over 43,000 people! Being that Hong Kong is such an expensive city, the government developed this area to offer low income families the opportunity to live in a nice subsidized public housing residence. With only one car park and five colorful schools, it’s no wonder this residential area is in such high demand among locals.

As you walk around Choi Hung Estate, you will notice every building, including the schools are made to look like a rainbow. The reasoning behind the rainbow colored buildings was to uplift the spirits of the residents in the area. There is one spot in particular that claims to be the best place to take in all the rainbow colored residences. Surprisingly, it is on top of the one car park in the area. At the tip top you will find a basketball court for kids to enjoy during the day. From here you can take it all in. As always, just remember to be respectful of the residents in the area. Don’t interrupt their basketball games or intrude on their daily lives.
