If you’re looking to bury your head in the sand and beach while on vacation, then head to one of our favorite places to eat on Block Island, Beachead.

After taking the ferry from New London to New Shoreham, we dropped our bags off at The Sea Breeze Block Island. Our room wasn’t ready for check-in yet so we walked over to a seaside restaurant they recommended for lunch. The Beachead is a restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating located across from Crescent Beach. On this hot summer day, we decided to sit under the covered patio. A super cool bar table in the shape of a boat was across from us and string lights brought an inviting ambiance to the place. Of all the places to eat on Block Island, Beachead made our list.

We sat down and ordered a Kraken Rum Punch, I loved the orange color the orange and pineapple juice gave it. The strong Kraken rum spice balances all the fresh fruit flavors bringing my head right into a tropical or New England island state of being. Live music performer, Nena and the Cosmos, were playing outside Beachead. Live music here is common. Nena was singing Marvin Gaye when we arrived and the vibes continued throughout our lunch, she had quite an amazing voice! Pat and I later found out that live music was somewhat of a ‘thing’ on Block Island…more on that later.

As a starter we ordered littleneck clams. Mainly because I told Pat I had never had them and he was shocked. A wonderful iced platter was brought to us with lemon, cocktail sauce, and mignonette. The clams were small and somewhat sweet. They are considered the most flavorful of the clam family! They have a pure, salty ocean flavor when popped into your mouth-the ultimate beach food.

Beachead’s menu runs the gamut, but of course fish is their specialty on the menu. For lunch I ordered a beet salad with salmon. I’m actually not a huge fan of beets and never eat them, but that day that salad inspired me for some reason with asparagus and feta. Strangely, the bold flavors in the salad made my taste buds really happy and it was exactly what I wanted. Pat ordered the fresh fish sandwich, which was baked or fried haddock on a bulky roll. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside with a lightly buttered roll.

The Beachead was a laid back and typical Block Island restaurant. If you are looking for places to eat on Block Island don’t miss out on Beachead, whether it’s for lunch, drinks, or dinner. The food is excellent, prices are acceptable, and best of all the views and ambiance are down to earth and beachy-after all it is called Beachead for a reason!
