While the basilica in Gallipoli, Puglia draws your eye, it’s hard not to pay attention to the surrounding negozi, or shops, that wrap around Piazza Duomo. The majority may look like they are selling gimmicky souvenirs like dolls, postcards, hats, and magnets, but it’s far from it. If you look deep enough, you’ll find that a lot of the negozi are selling local products that are unique to Gallipoli and the Salento area.

Being a fishermen’s village, a lot of the local souvenirs specialize in marine objects such as shells, star fish, corals, lamps and other artisanal products to take home, and of course, the typical terracotta dolls made by hand that represent the massaie salentine. Massaie Salentine are a representation of the typical artisanal woman from Salento that for centuries worked in the fields. But one of my favorite and most unique things to shop in Gallipoli for is the natural Mediterranean sea sponge.

Gallipoli is actually known as the historical village of natural sea sponges. Fishing for sponges was actually a sport in the Olympic games way back when! Fishing for them though needs to be done properly. When done properly they regrow in the same place within a matter of 2 to 4 years. Natural sea sponges are not living beings, but they are not industrial products either. They belong to the group of “spongus,” which means both animal and plant.

So how do you use natural sea sponges? They may look coarse and rough, but actually are super soft and excellent for bathing. The natural sea sponges contain enzymes that make them antibacterial and inhibit the growth of bacteria, mildew, and mold. Plus they are hypo-allergenic and toxin free. The best natural sea sponges are those fished in temperate seas, like the Mediterranean and Ionian sea, making Gallipoli a noteworthy place to buy them.
