Eat in Fès: Dar Roumana

Experience the tranquility and sensuality of exotic Fès mixed with a gourmet twist. Nestled away in a dark alley deep in the Fès Medina lies Dar Roumana. A very small Riad with limited seating, the Riad makes for a highly intimate and romantic experience alongside a traditional meal with a gourmet edge.

Pat and I looked down a dark and narrow alleyway, deep in the outskirts of the Fès Medina, and questioned whether Dar Roumana could possibly be located in this desolate street. After speaking to a few locals, we were instructed that in fact yes, Dar Roumana was down this ominous alleyway! Like everything in Morocco, the most beautiful of palaces and Riads are unexpected, especially from the outside. As we ring the doorbell, a man opens the door for us and offers us a seat at one of the five (5) tables available in the courtyard.

Dar Roumana, which means House of Pomegranate, is a restored traditional Fassi guesthouse with only five (5) rooms. The boutique stay is intimate and opulent with a touch of French flair. We had actually considered staying in Dar Roumana as one of options while in Fès, but ended up opting for another Riad instead. However, I do recommend people look into this guesthouse as well when planning their trip to Fès!

The Dar Roumana cuisine was made known among foodies by the renowned French Chef Vincent, a chef who has worked in several Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK, worked for legendary Chef’s in Australia, and catered to celebs on their yachts in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. Even one of my personal favorite celebs Jeremy Clarkson is a huge fan of Chef Vincent’s cuisine! Today, the kitchen is led by Chef Younes Idriss who worked alongside Chef Vincent for 7 years. Chef Younes continues to expound on Chef Vincents menu and style of service, with its reasonable prices (after all, we are in Morocco, and a little money can go a long way here!)

The menu is comprised of traditional Moroccan cuisine with a Mediterranean twist and changes daily based on the markets freshest produce. Unfortunately, we did not get to enjoy a drink on their spectacular roof terrace, so we ordered a bottle of wine in the colorful courtyard carved with cedar wood and beautiful tiles.

As a starter I ordered the grilled octopus, while Patrick ordered the gazpacho. The starters were perfect in size and were a great palate cleanser before digging into the real treat of the night..the entrée.

I ordered the rabbit with potato purée and Patrick ordered the lamb with steamed vegetables. Both meals were bursting with flavor and freshness and beautifully presented. The flavors mixed perfectly with one another, no flavor was too overpowering.

We finished the night with a Moroccan favorite crème brûlée with chocolate ice cream and a freshly made in-house Almond lemon cake with lemon sorbet! You could truly taste how fresh the lemon sorbet was, the tanginess was unbelievable and made our taste buds tingle with delight.

Intimate, Michelin-worthy, traditional with a gourmet twist, and a beautiful setting make Dar Roumana a must-try for any visitor in Fès. We highly recommend making a reservation before 2PM due to the limited number of tables available. This was one of the best meals Pat and I had during our 10 days in Morocco.
