Flying in Asia or to Asia and not sure which airlines to use? Here are my reviews flying 3 different airlines within Asia: Cathay Pacific, Air India, and Asiana Airlines.
I don’t usually write airline reviews, but I’ve noticed that people always seem surprised when I recommend certain airlines. Many don’t know the difference between a China Eastern and Asiana Airlines and choose to go the safe route, spending more than double the price for flights with United or Delta. So here I am, reporting on my experience flying in Asia and to Asia with 3 different airlines.
WHAT NOT TO FLY
I already touched on this in a previous article, but when faced with a choice book anything, but always avoid flying in Asia or to Asia with China Eastern. I haven’t experienced it first-hand, but I have not read or heard great reviews about the airline. Let me know if you’ve experienced otherwise!
AIRLINE #1: CATHAY PACIFIC (7.5/10)
Flying in Asia: A Review of Cathay Pacific from New York to Hong Kong
There are only 2 direct flights from New York to Hong Kong. One is with United and it only flies out of Newark once a day. The other is with Cathay Pacific and it flies out of Newark up to four times a day and offers better flight times. I went with the best flight time, 1AM and spent $911 roundtrip. That’s not bad considering the price for other airlines that include stopovers. Here were some of the observations I made throughout my Cathay Pacific flight:
AIRLINE #2: AIR INDIA (8.5/10)
I flew Air India from Hong Kong to Seoul in economy class. I took an early morning flight from 8:05AM to 12:30PM that lasted 3 hours and 30 minutes. We landed at 12:30PM because of the one hour time difference. The price was very reasonable at only $156. See below for a list of my pros and cons:
AIRLINE #3: ASIANA AIRLINES (7/10)
I flew economy class with Asiana Airline from Seoul to Shanghai. I took a late night flight from 8PM to 9PM. The flight was only 2 hours, but it felt like one because of the time difference. The flight was quite expensive compared to the longer Air India flight. I spent $217.
There you have it! My review of three airlines I used when flying in Asia. One thing to note is that my experience could be very different from yours depending on what airline you get and what time of day you fly. However, across the board, the experience should be as I outlined above.
For those wondering how I get any sleep on flights…
Check out my newest in flight obsession the Trtl Travel Pillow. I decided to invest in a neck pillow that can get us to our final destination well rested and ready to start the day. It was worth every penny. Not only is it soft and light because of it’s fleece material, but it’s scientifically proven to give you better ergonometric head and neck support than your regular u-shaped neck pillow. Plus, it adapts to fit any neck shape, jaw, and shoulder, so no one Trtl Travel Pillow is the same.
