If crowds and daunting 142 step staircases are not for you, then maybe the local Vail Beach hiding behind Mohegan Bluffs is the beach for you.

After biking the hills from the Sea Breeze Bed and Breakfast to Southeast Lighthouse and Mohegan Bluffs, Pat and I were hot and covered in sweat. We were in desperate need of a jump in the ocean. The General Manager at Sea Breeze Bed and Breakfast, Corey, had recommended we visit a lesser frequented beach called Vail Beach next to Mohegan Bluffs in case there were crowds. We took our bikes from Mohegan Bluffs and continued down Spring Street till we came across the Painted Rock at the intersection of Mohegan Trail and Lakeside Drive. To the left of the Painted Rock was Snake Hole Road. At the end of the road was a wooden sign that read “beach,” we were in the right spot.

We dropped our bikes off in a small meadow covered in yellow flowers and began our descent towards Vail Beach. Thankfully, we were wearing sneakers the entire time, or this descent wouldn’t have been as easy. The spaces began to narrow and the scrubs began to shorten to the point where we needed to crouch down every now and then to make it through the narrow path. The descent doesn’t take long, I’d say 5-10 minutes. It ends with a spring that leads to a rocky beach.

Travel Tip:
The key to visiting Block Island is to make sure that you are wearing a comfortable bathing suit at all times. With all the biking you’ll be doing, you will be jumping in and out of the water more times than you can think. But you still need to be comfortable when biking and look stylish when stopping for lunch or into a store. Patrick’s new go-to bathing suit is Eubi’s Flex Technology shorts. He was wearing Eubi during our entire Block Island trip! They have 4 way stretchable material for ultimate mobility and a soft inner mesh perfect for when you’re biking. Eubi’s dense microfibre fabric is also breathable, absorbing moisture off your skin and drying 3 times faster then regular bathing suits, so you can hit the road quickly without having to wait to dry off.

It’s important to keep in mind that a lot of the beaches on the South shore of Block Island (where Mohegan Bluffs is) are pebbles, stones, and rocks backed by cliffs. After all, you are facing the Atlantic ocean. The east side of the island on the other hand has whiter, smoother sand backed by grass-covered dunes. That’s what makes Block Island so great, you can have your pick of what type of beach you want to experience every day.

The beach might not look like much from here, except for a few rocks, but don’t be fooled. Walk to your left, back towards Mohegan Bluffs and head behind the cliff. Here you’ll get a dramatic view of Mohegan Bluffs and the staircase in the distance, the Southeast Lighthouse , and the new wind turbines. The people walking down the staircase look like dots from here. It’s only Pat and I and another couple at Vail Beach. We found a spot to lie clear of rocks and decided to go in for a quick swim.

Secluded, rocky, empty, and with stunning views, Vail Beach is the perfect hideout on a crowded weekend or even if you’re just looking to move away from the crowds. Finding Vail Beach and making the descent may be a bit difficult, especially for little ones, but that’s what makes the beach so secluded and so worth while!
