Jongno-gu, an enchanting district in Seoul, Korea, is divided into several distinct neighborhoods, each with its own rich history and cultural offerings. Whether you’re starting your Seoul adventure or looking for new experiences, this guide will introduce you to the top attractions and things to do in Jongno-gu. From exploring the artistic alleys of Insadong to indulging in the bustling nightlife of Myeongdong, Jongno-gu has something for everyone.
1. Insadong: Immerse Yourself in Culture & Art
Insadong, located in Jongno-gu, Seoul, is a neighborhood known for its traditional market, art and antique heritage. The main street, Insadong-gil, is a bustling hub of modern cafés, boutique stores, and art galleries. Stroll under the lantern-lit entrance, venture into the winding alleyways, and explore the vibrant mix of contemporary and traditional offerings. From cultural artifacts to strange and quirky coffee shops, Insadong is a true representation of past and present Korea. As you walk, keep in mind that many of these buildings that have not been renovated were once owned by merchants, bureaucrats, and government officials.
2. Poop Café (Ddo-ong Café): A Unique Cafe Experience
Café culture is huge in Seoul, and Jongno-gu doesn’t disappoint. It has grown in popularity in recent year because people’s apartments are small and have low ceilings. Coffee shops have become the perfect open space area to meet friends. For Koreans the taste of the coffee isn’t as important as the actual design and concept of the coffee shop. Obviously when they have both design and taste, it makes them even more popular. A lot of the peculiar cafés reside in the artistic neighborhood of Insadong. But there was just so much coffee I could have when in Seoul, so I wasn’t able to make it to this one, strange café.
One peculiar café worth mentioning is the Poop Café (Ddo-ong Café), located in Jongno-gu. The concept to us may sound disgusting, but poop emojis are a huge thing in Asia. Embracing the popular poop emoji trend, this café serves coffee in toilet-shaped cups and offers poop-shaped scones. With quirky decorations and a playful atmosphere, it’s an unconventional yet memorable spot for a coffee break. Add that on top of you sitting on little toilets and being given poop foam hats, this definitely will not feel like a déjà poop (the feeling of having seen this crap before)…!
3. Tongmungwan: Delve into Seoul’s Oldest Bookstore
Step into Tongmungwan, the oldest bookstore in Seoul, nestled in Jongno-gu. Since the 1940s, this bookstore has been a haven for discovering Korea’s rich history and cultural heritage through its vast collection of books. Lee Gyeom-ro was the first to open the bookstore. Instead of taking household belongings when he sought refuge from North Korea during the Korean war, he took 80 of his most precious books. He opened a bookstore and three generations later, the bookstore is still collecting and selling ever original Korean cultural heritage. The books can cost up to millions of wons. Take a moment to browse through the shelves and immerse yourself in the knowledge and stories preserved within its walls.
4. Kyung-in Art Gallery: Where Art & Tea Converge
Kyung-in is the oldest tea house in Seoul. The cultural center is home to many daily calligraphy demonstrations, pansori dances, art exhibits, performances and more. Once you’ve explored all Kyungi-in art gallery is offering during your stay there you have two options for indulging in tea. The first is the teahouse. The teahouse offers different herbal teas and natural fruit ice cream with the intention of melting away your fatigue. The second place is Dawon. A hanging bell on the edge of the roof sounds with with the wind in the beauty of this traditional Korean-style hanok, or house. Dawon offers 15 different types of traditional Korea tea that you can enjoy while admiring the sculptures in the garden. My recommendation is to enjoy tea at Dawon in Jongno-gu.
5. Ssamji-gil: Discover Unique Handmade Korean Goods
Shopping is one of my favorite things to do in Seoul. Ssamji-gil courtyard in Jongno-gu is special because it does not offer branded stores. This courtyard-style shopping center is a treasure trove of locally crafted Korean goods. Ssamji-gil is hard to miss with it’s spiraling staircases and evident courtyard circled with lights. With over 70 stores selling handmade products ranging from food items to intricate artworks, Ssamji-gil offers a glimpse into Korea’s vibrant creative scene. The majority are food, but you’ll also find complex workshops and galleries owned by local artisans. While here, head up to Sky Garden on the 4th-floor for a sweeping view of Insadong.
6. Waryongdong: Tranquil Respite in the Heart of Jongno-gu
Neighboring the popular Insadong district, Waryongdong is a delightful neighborhood within Jongno-gu, Seoul. Renowned for its picturesque Waryong-dong Park, this area offers much more than just greenery. Take a leisurely stroll slightly below the park, and you’ll find yourself wandering through enchanting tree-lined streets. These quaint streets are dotted with charming cafes, delightful restaurants, and local supermarkets, providing a peaceful escape from the bustling and vibrant atmosphere of Insadong. For some added entertainment, venture into one of the lively arcades that populate this bustling district. Challenge your skills at various games and experience the excitement of the arcade culture. If you’re in the mood for singing your heart out, head to a noraebang or Karaoke bar, where you can unleash your inner superstar.
As the night progresses, immerse yourself in the pulsating energy of Myeongdong’s clubs, where you can dance the night away to electrifying beats. And to conclude your unforgettable evening, take a leisurely stroll down the enchanting Cheonggyecheon Stream, admiring the tranquil waters under the night sky.
