It’s confirmed. You can’t leave Block Island without catching an unbelievable Santorini-like sunset (minus the crowds) from Dories Cove.

It was like a scene out of Stranger Things. Imagine Pat and I paddling our bikes frantically across Block Island as fast as we could trying to catch the sunset while all dressed up right before dinner. There was a short window of time to watch the sunset on Dories Cove, also spelled Dorey’s Cove, and we weren’t going to miss it. One of the secrets the Sea Breeze Block Island shared with us was that the best sunsets can be seen from secluded coves on the West side of the island.

A small quarter mile dirt path leads towards rolling hills and houses down by the sea. Being a dirt road, it’s only accessible to bikes and cars, not mopeds. Keep in mind however that there is limited parking down there, enough for 1 or 2 cars, so taking a bike there is best. Once there you cut throw a short shrub that leads to a rocky beach with a wooden log perfect for sitting on and enjoying the sunset.

When we had arrived, no one was there yet. We had Dories Cove all to ourselves! We took in Block Island’s rugged beauty right before the sunset started. As soon as the sun began to descend a family pulled up in a car and ran down to Dories Cove. Apparently Grace’s Cove was muddy to get to so they had to rush to Dories Cove to catch the sunset. If it hadn’t been for the mud, we would’ve had the whole beach to ourselves.

The sun began to set, it reflected into the sea making it doubly as beautiful. As the sun got closer to the water, the colors deepened and became finer in quality. The reds bled into orange, the orange into yellows, and the white into blues. At one point the atmosphere blended all the hues together, making the sea and the sky one and the same. We watched as the burning orange and red sunset faded from sight behind the sea.

At the end of sunset, Pat and I took our bikes and peddled towards Dead Eye Dicks for dinner. It’s confirmed. If there is one thing you can’t miss when on Block Island, it’s catching a sunset from one of the secluded coves on the West side of the island.
