Après Ski in Breck: Rocky Mountain Underground

What’s the best part of skiing, aside from hitting the slopes on a fresh layer of powder? Après ski. I checked out the après ski scene at Rocky Mountain Underground in Breck.

What’s the best part of skiing, aside from hitting the slopes on a fresh layer of powder? Après ski. I checked out the après ski scene at Rocky Mountain Underground in Breck.

Half ski shop, half tavern, Rocky Mountain Underground gives off a laidback Breck vibe the Founder has been creating since Rocky Mountain Underground’s inception. Rocky Mountain Underground, or RMU, was started in 2008 by Mike Waesche who built skis with his friends out of his garage for beer. Following his success, he decided to move his business to Main Street, where he opened Rocky Mountain Underground, the first-ever shop and tavern in Breck.

When you walk into the shop/tavern on Main Street, the feeling is of stepping into the garage he worked out of 10 years ago. It’s just as friendly, a bit more maintained, but still with a spartan vibe. Don’t be surprised to catch live bands playing here on the regular. On the left is the store area and on the right is the tavern. The store and tavern have a patio with outdoor space heaters for those who want to step outside and a backyard beer garden to enjoy in the summer. The bar area is small with about 8 seats and high tops. The majority of people walk around the store and tavern with beers and wine glasses in hand, browsing the gear, watching live sports on TV, and chit chatting. To top it off, like most places in Breck, it’s dog-friendly.

The store sells everything you could need for the ski and snow season, including some of their strangest and coolest inventions such as the world’s first dog collar that turns into a water bowl. They even sell hand-crafted skis!

I spent the majority of my time doing après ski in the tavern area. The bar has up to 12 rotating craft beers year round. It also has the County’s only Beer Engine, a traditional and historic way of serving cask fermented ales, also known as “Firkins.” I wanted to order something different from the norm, so had a spiked apple cider.

Whether you’re looking for a hand-crafted new pair of skis, some rental gear, or just an après ski drink, head to Rocky Mountain Underground if you want to be surrounded by friendly locals who are in the in the know. Once you’ve had a drink or two, head back out onto Main Street and discover the remaining colorful and Victorian town of Breck.
